BRITISH PROTEST TO AUSTRALIA:. RAYON TARIFF
LONDON, June 22 (Rec. 1 p.m.).— The President of the Board of Trade, Mr Harold WilsOn. told the House of Commons today that Britain had protested to the Australian Government against the increased tariff on British rayon piece goods. The protest had been made through the British High Commissioner in Canberra, and the British’ Government was giving the matter its closest attention. Mr Wilson was replying to Mr W. Nally (Labour), who asked what steps the. Government was taking to draw the Australian Government s attention to “the serious consequences the new tariff would have on our rayon industry and on Australian consumers.” . - The Australian increases in duty average ls’4ld per square yard. The Customs Department, in announcing the increases, said it believed that quick and effective action was necessary to protect the Australian rayon industry. ■
