Emergency Proposal The fact that the alternative road goods service instituted between West Coast and Canterbury following the recent rail disruptions, did not provide for heavy goods was referred to at last evening’s meeting of the Westland Progress League. It was decided to suggest that in any future emergencies a freight truck' be made available for heavier goods.
Taramakau Bridge
The urgent need for a bridge to be placed across the Taramakau river near Kumara, replacing the structure which was badly damaged in last month’s .flood, was stressed at the half-yearly meeting of the Westland Progress League at Hokitika last evening. The league decided to draw the attention of the Minister of Works, Mr W. S. Goosman, to the position.
Railwayman Burned An employee of the Railways Department gt Otira, Mr Ray Hines, aged 23, single, was burned in an accident in his hut at Otira early last evening. He is believed to have been cooking his tea wvhen fat was spilled on a small stove and flared up, setting the hut on fire. The outbreak was extinguished without serious damage, but Mr Hines > received burns to his face and neck which necessitated his admission to the Grey Hospital. His condition today was reported to be satisfactory.
