UNO SECRETARY TO RENEW HIS PLEA FOR PEACE
NEW YORK, June 20.—Mr Trygve Lie, Secretary-General of the United Nations, is expected to renew his “peace offensive” in what a spokesman described as “a major policyspeech” to be delivered at the Guildhall, London, on July 3. Mr Lie is expected to make a fresh plea for his' 10-point United Nations programme which calls for now attempts to bridge the East-West gap in the United Nations. His programme had a lukewarm reception in the United States and diplomatic circles at Lake Success take it for granted that the first round in Mr Lie’s missions has not been a success. However, Mr Lie, in private conversations, has not concealed that he is ready for “another go.” Mr Lie is known to have been tremendously impressed during hi's trip to Europe by the apparent eagerness of European countries for any attempt to switch attention from the cold war to possible methods of East-West compromise, and to have formed the conclusion that there is more public support in Europe than in the Jnited States for his efforts.
In his projected speech Mr Lie is also expected to renew his plea to United Nations members to solve the so-called Chinese problem which has stymied meetings of all major United Nations organisations since the beginning of the year. He has circulated a memorandum to all members setting forth legal arguments in favour of unseating the Chinese Nationalist delegates and replacing them in all United Nations bodies with representatives from the Peking Government. •
