LATE NEWS BETTING PLAN SAID TO LOOK “WORKABLE AND ACCEPTABLE”

AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).— The proposed off-course betting scheme should be both workable and acceptable to th.e racing clubs, .said the president of the Auckland Racing Club, Dr A. McGregor Grant, today. “In outline, the plan looks very good,” he said. “The clubs couldn’t possibly find the necessary capital and the application of a half per cent, additional levy is a sound scheme and this may not have to 'last long if the turnover is high.” There would be no burden on the racing club, except possibly a slightly increased staff to handle the additional totalisator work, ho stated. The big question‘was how to get money from the various parts of the country to the central office handling betting. This would have to be worked out when "the final details were being prepared. “It is unfortunate that the country’s telegraph system can’t at present. be used - for telegraphing investments. This may present difficulties to country people, but we must remember that we were warned of this problem originally. The scheme is not planned to allow a man to become a, confirmed punter, but ■to allow people who have a fancy to place their bet,” concluded Dr Grant.

Lorry Drivers’ Claim For “Dirt” Money WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.). —No settlement had been reached by 1 p.m. today in the negotiations between the Wellington Drivers’ Union and the Wellington Carriers’ Association concerning special rates for drivers carrying lamp-black. The drivers continued to work while the dispute was considered and the president of the Carriers’ Association, Mi’ F. Bognuda, said today that the pen had kept to the terms of their agreement by not stopping work. However, they did not begin work this morning until informed by their secretary, Mr T. Magee, that the reports about direct action being taken were unfounded.
