SPORTING ITALIAN-BRED MEDORO WILL HELP TROTTING IN NORTH
Foaled in Italy in 1940, the trotting horse Medoro has been purchased by Mr Noel Simpson, of Auckland, for his Yendarra stud at Atahuhu. During his racing career Medoro recorded 19 wins and 18, placings in 47 starts. A half-sister, Rosalind, 1.56* holds the world mile record for a trotting mare.
Medoro is by Prince Hall, 2.0:1, son of The Laurel Hall and Princess Etawah, from Alma Lee, 2.41, by Lee Worthy from Jane Revere, by Guy Aneworthy.
Medoro is one of the most superbly-bred trotting horses ever to come to New Zealand. By Prince Hall from Alma Lee, by Lee Worthy from Jan Revere, by Guy Axworthy, Medoro’s pedigree is wholly American and embraces strains which dominate trotting, not only in the United States, but also in Europe, where the sport has made tremendous advances in recent years. As a matter of fact, trotting in Italy enjoys far greater popularity than galloping. Prince Hall (2.0|), a son of The Laurel Hall (sire of Dillon Hall), has been leading sire in Italy for the last four seasons, and his success has been so phenomenal that it is unlikely he will be deposed for some years yet. On' the maternal side, his dam, Alma Lee (2.4-4), is claimed as the greatest standard-bred brood mare in the world. High praise, but, apparently warranted. Apart from Medoro, Alma Lee produced Rosalind, Floridoro, Cisa, Pandoro and Esperia, all top-class or champion racehorses.
Medoro’s racing career was considerably restricted by the war (he was foaled in 1940), but the Prince Hall horse still built up a fine record. In 47 starts, he won 19 times and was placed on 18 other occasions, his' stake-earnings amounting to 1,912,600 lire. He is a fine cut of a horse, solidly-made, with a good head, splendid neck and body, well coupled and of perfect sire temperament. If he turns out the success it is confidently expected he will, he will be of inestimable value to trotting in the north.
Spectacular Jumping High Oi'dei' gave a dashing exhibition of spectacular jumping in the County Hurdles at the Manawatu meeting, in which he tried to lead all the way, but he was beaten by the fifth favourite, Carey. Half-way through the race High Order had a lead of 10 lengths, but the field closed on him about half a mile from* home, and Carey got on terms with him just before they reached the straight.
World Record Broken The Irish-bred racehorse, Noor, broke the world record for nine furlongs on Saturday when he beat Citation in the 10,000-dollar Fortyniners’ Handicap at Albany, California. It was Noor’s third successive victory over Citation, the world’s greatest stake winner, and on each occasion Noor has broken a record. The time of Noor on Saturday, 1.46 4-5, lowered the existing record by four-fifths of a second. Noor won by a neck after a great battle in the straight. ASHBURTON COUNTY R.C.
