Temperamental Actress

SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 (Rec. 10 a.m.). —A film actress, Judy Garland, cut her throat in a fit of aguish, her studio. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer announced today. A studio spokesman said the wound was not seri'ous. Miss Garland broke a drinking glass in a bathroom and made a superficial laceration on her throat. The actress had rushed into the bathroom of her Hollywood home and locked the door after she had become despondent and hysterical during a meeting at which her business future was being discussed. Miss Garland’s husband, Vincent Minelli, persuaded the actress to open the door. A doctor who was called did not find it necessary to stitch the wound. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer suspended Miss Garland last week for failing to attend a rehearsal of a picture.

Reuter’s Frankfurt correspondent says that the number of daily newspapers in West Germany has increased from 150 on July 1 last year to 1075. Of these 235 are run under Allied licences. The others have been started since the Allied licensing system was abolished last summer. Bavaria, with 231, has the largest number of dailies.—London, June 20.
