SCHOOL BUS SERVICE FROM KUMARA HAS BEEN SUSPENDED
The daily bus -service bringing school pupis from Kumara to Greymouth was abruptly suspended early this week when the only bus available for the purpose developed a serious mechanical fault. The proprietor Mr P.. J. Dark, had earlier announced his intention of relinquishing the contract for the service but had consented to continue for a period until alternative arrangements could be made.
For the past two days pupils from Kumara and the Hokitika line districts have reverted to the previous means of transport, by ordinary rail service. This means a loss of an hour’s schooling each day and also a late arrival home from school. The Railways Department has made temporary arrangements for the issue of free school travelling passes to the pupils concerned. The bus service, which caters for pupils of the Greymouth Technical High School and the Marist and Convent Schools, has been in operation for about a year, and has proved satisfactory, although no service is provided on Saturdays for pupils taking part in school sports activities. Several proposals for an alternative bus service are under discussion, and for this purpose the traffic superintendent of the Canterbury Education Board will arrive in Greymouth on Monday. The service which was established between Kumara and Greymouth last year to cater for workers, is not affected as a smaller bus is continuing the run as usual
