No Protest Against Bill

Anti-Communist members of the Ironworkers’ Federation have defeated a move by the Sydney executive, which is Communist-controlled, to 1 call a one-day stoppage in protest against the Federal Government’s anti-Communist legislation. During the last three days meetings have been held at the major dockyards and metal workshops in Sydney. At most of these overwhelming majorities were recorded against the proposed stoppage. At Wollongong, a mass meeting of the rank and file members of the Port Kembla branch reversed the decision of their Com-munist-dominated management to hold a stopwork meeting to protest against the bill. In Melbourne, the Australian Council of Trade Unions has adopted a recommendation supporting the Labour Party’s decision to press for substantial amendments, to the bill.—Sydney, May 19.
