Wool Store At New Plymouth

With the primary object of providing a port store for the port of New Plymouth, which is a facility to be found at all other ports used by overseas vessels, and which are es-

sential for their economical working, a wool store is to be erected on a site in Wharf street, adjacent to the Newton King Wharf, by the New Zealand Shipping Company. This was stated by the general manager of the company, Mr F. W. Spite, at a dinner at New Plymouth last night. At present, Mr Spite said, other than the wool from the Waitara works, the wool of all Taranaki and a certain amount of King Country wool had to be'sent to Wanganui for dumping, and then either railed ■ back to New Plymouth or shipped 'coastwise to Wellington. Apart from being uneconomical, this added to the congestion at Wellington. With facilities for dumping at New Plymouth, it was-expected that certain King Country wool would be diverted from Auckland and shipped through the port of New Plymouth, thus assisting in a small measure to relieve the congestion at Auckland. -(P.A.) Fighting In Burma Government troops have reopened the road to Mandalay by the recapture of Pyinmana. It is announced that this has also resulted in. the clearing of the central Burma area. It will be some time before rail services to Rangoon can be resumed because the track and bridges are damaged in many places. Martial law is to be pxtended to the Pyinmana area for “the speedy restoration of law and order.” 'Thakur Than Tun, Prime Minister of the newly-formed Communist rebel Government at Prome, 160 miles north of Rangoon, has proclaimed martial law and imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew' in the territory he holds. The Communists released several Government officials and police officers to celebrate I the formation of the new “State.”— Rangoon, March 31. '
