TRADES COUNCIL OPPOSED TO SALE OF DREDGE
The Greymouth Harbour Board’s proposal to sell its dredge, Mawhera, to the Government for use at Westport is to be opposed by the West Coast Trades Council until such time as the full facts of the position are placed before the public. A resolution to this effect was carried unanimously at a meeting of the council last evening. The delegate of the Waterside Workers Union,. Mr. W. Meates, in bringing the matter to the attention of the council, said that the river was continually shoaling and, without the use of the dredge, the port would “silt entirely* This view was supported by Mr U. H. Met- ‘ trick delegate of the Harbour Board Workers’ Union, who claimed that the council should intercede for the retention of the dredge. The following resolution, proposed by the secretarv of the council, Mr F. L. Turley, and seconded by Mr J. Henderson, was carried unanimously: “That this council protests to the Greymouth Harbour Board against its proposal to dispose of the dredge Mawiiera until such time as the board places all of the reasons therefor before the public, and gives the public all the facts, as to whit appears to be one of the most stupid moves ever coming from a local body on the West Coast*
