YACHT STRIKES REEF IN TASMAN BAY
NELSON, March 30 (P.A.).—While on a pleasure cruise in Tasman Bay, the 50-foot ketch-rigged auxiliary yacht Rakoa this morning went on a reef about two miles off-shore from Sandy Bay. The yacht, owned and sailed by Mi’ H. R. Tomkies, of Lower Hutt, is believed to have escaped serious damage and is expected to be refloated on the high tide late this afternoon. After visiting the Marlborough Sounds, the yacht reached Nelson yesterday and sailed last evening. The vessel’s plight was noticed this morning by residents of Sandy Bay and Mr R. Franklyn went out to her in a small boat with an outboard motor. He took Mr Tomkies ashore to telephone for assistance. The sea was calm at the time and the weather fine.
The Nelson Harbour Board reported at midday that arrangements had been made for the Motueka launch Joan Marie to stand by the yacht at high water and give assistance if necessary.
The Rakoa was built by her owner and launched in the Hutt river two years ago. "
