AMENDMENTS TO BANK BILL NOT ACCEPTABLE
CANBERRA, March 30.—The Federal Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) told journalists that the Government would not accept amendments to the Commonwealth Bank Bill or the child endowment legislation which the Labour Party might endeavour to force through on the strength of its majority in the Senate. “There will be no compromise,” he said. “If the Labour Party in the Senate rejects the Bank Bill, it reP' iects it lock, stock and barrel. The Bill is a well-considared whole, and it will be so treated by the Government. The same comment applies to the Child Endowment Bill.” In the House of Representatives the Labour Leader (Mr Chifley) said recently that Labour would oppose the clause in the Bank Bill seeking to. re-establish the Commonwealth Bank Board. The Labour majority in the Senate also proposes to increase the endowment payable under the new Bill for the first child in each family from 5s to 10s a week. Previously the Chifley Government opposed the granting of any endowment to the first child.
