LEON BLUM DEAD: FRANCE’S FIRST SOCIALIST PREMIER

PARIS, March 30 (Rec. 10 a.m.). —M. Leon Blum, veteran French Socialist leader and France’s first Jewish and first Socialist Prime Minister, died suddenly today within a week of his 78th birthday. He was Premier three times and failed by only TO votes to head the Government for a fourth time in November, 1947. During the war he was tried at Vichy and imprisoned by the Germans. He recently served as an elder statesman of the Socialist Party and was editor of the party’s newspaper, Le Populaire. M. Blum was writing a letter on the current political situation after lunch when he complained of feeling ill. He died 40 minutes later. Three physicians who were summoned arrived after his death. Both Houses of Parliament heard eulogies of the former Premier and then went into recess in mourning.
