British League Team
Australian and New Zealand Rugby League teams are in for some rough handling by the British touring team’s forwards, according to Australian Arthur Clues, who is now playing for Leeds.
Summing up the team, Clues said: “The forwards selected are not the type who play open, constructive football, but are the bullocking, bashing type. “Evidently the intention behind the selectors’ choice is to try and rattle Australia and New Zealand by weight and strength. “Doug Phillips, Elwyn Gwyther, Bob Ryan, Danny Naughton, and Harry Murphy are men capable of doing this.” Britain’s touring captain in 1946, Gus Risman, considers that the team is a shade better than the 1946 side because of a better blending of youth and experience.
“I expect the team to bring back the Ashes, although I am a little dubious about Joe Egan and Ken Gee, because I think they are past their best,” Risman said.
