TOXIC CHEMICAL WARFARE: U.S. COUNTER PLANS

WASHINGTON, . January 30 — “The evidence indicates that othei nations have experimented with new and untried forms of toxic chemical warfare; it is impossible, therefore, to disregard the potentialities in these fields, and the United States must be adequately equipped for this type of warfare.” This is stated in a report of the Defence Secretary, Mr Louis Johnson, on the American defence services for the year ended June 30, 1949. The report says that the U.S. Army Chemical Corps has carried out an intensive programme of investigation of toxic agents, and of means for defence, against such agents. The report also says that the armed forces have a special weapons project at San Dia base, in New Mexico. It has maintained active military participation in new weapon designs and development in production in co-operation with the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The Commission has maintained a branch of its Los Almos Laboratory at the San Dia base, and selected members of the armed services were trained in the use of atomic weapons.
