LEWIS PASS BUS SERVICE GROWING: STILL UNECONOMIC
Established about the middle of last vear the “luxury” bus service which runs thrice weekly between Christchurch and Hokitika, and vice versa, is now coping with a growing demand. The service, which was first sought bv a private bus company, but awarded by the Transport Licensing Authority to the New Zealand Railway. Road Service, was run at a loss during the initial stages. Increased tourist patronage has however, been accorded the service during the summer, particularly during the last month. Though the original fare has been reduced, the service is still not economically independent, it is understood. The bus is mainly patronised _by tourists, and the demand from Christchurch and from the Hokitika end is about equal,
