BRITAIN WELCOMES NEW REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA

JACARTA, December 28 (Rec >lO a.m.). —The British Government welcomed and gave full de jure recognition to Indonesia, His Majesty’s Commissioner for South-east Asia, Mr Malcolm MacDonald, said at a reception held tonight at President Soekarno’s Jacarta palace. Mr MacDonald, in audience with President Soekarno, said: “My Sovereign wishes Indonesia security, prosperity, progress, peace and happiness.” , He gave President Soekarno a greeting document from the British Foreign Secretary, Mr Ernest Bevin, andfthe Prime Minister, Mr Attlee. A message from Washington says the United States today formally recognised the new Government of Indonesia. Mr H. Merle Cochran, the first Ambassador to the new Republic has already.presented his' credentials. Mr Cochran, as United States representative on the United Nations Commission for Indonesia, had a major part in bringing about the agreement that created the new republic. The Chinese National Government also granted de jure recognition to the new State today. -
