Scientists Isolated
The relief ship John Briscoe has been delayed for a week by unfavourable ice reports, but has now left the Falkland Islands to make an air base on Deception Island as the first, step towards the rescue of 10 British scientists from three years’ detention on icebound Stonington Island. The latest radio reports from Deception Island say that it is encircled by 18 square miles of ice 24 feet thick. It is hoped that storms in the next few days will break up the barrier and enable the ship to force a way through.—London, November 28.
