200 SUNNY HOURS AT GREYMOUTH: NEW RECORD SET

A record has been set by West Coast’s weather this month, and at noon today a total of 200 hours of sunshine for the month was achieved. This is the first time since sunshine recordings have been taken at Greymouth—almost three years—that more than 200 hours of sunshine have been experienced in any one month. Last January, a preliminary count gave a total of 200.8 hours on 30 days, but a check reduced this total to 193 hours. The highest sunshiny total recorded prior to this month was in January, 1948 (198 hours). Only one day so far this month has been without sunshine, and the rainfall total of three and a-half inches on 13 days was mainly produced in heavy falls on three days (November 2, November 14, and November 25). The other inch fell on 10 separate occasions, but mainly at night- , , . . Temperatures have been high throughout the month, the highest of 64.9 on November 15, being the warmest since last summer. Only on five days did the maximum temperature fall below 60 degrees. Though the preceding month, October, produced the worst weather of the year, this month. has' been a reversal of these conditions, as if in answer to a Greymouth carrier, who, in evidence before the Transport Charges Committee earlier this month, strongly criticised the West Coast'-weather and the manner in which it restricted his firm’s business activities.
