Marut's Splendid Effort
Swayup set a fast pace from the outset of the Stewards’ Handicap, and had a clear lead entering upon the course proper from Duvaals, Vitamin and Sweet Spray. Swayup was still going strongly with a furlong to go, but Sweet Spray then threw out a challenge. The latter appeared to be facing an almost impossible task, but responding gamely to her rider’s vigorous efforts, while Swayup was showing the effects of the ordeal, she got up in the last stride to gain a head verdict. Magical, who was well placed all the way and had every chance, was a close third, a neck in front of Flying Sovereign, with Ballochmyle, Vitamin, False Step, Duvaals, Trafalgar Day, Western Winner, Cipher and His Nibs following in that order.
Sweet Spray will now be firm in favour for the New Zealand Oaks. The full-sister to the brilliant Sweet Nymph finished very fast on Saturday, and along with Super Snipe, she will provide strong North Island opposition in the Oaks. Final Event To Marut Personality carried most public confidence in the Riccarton Handicap, but after showing promise amongst the leading division a furlong from home, he failed to carry on and finished sixth. Lovemorn, Personality, Pierre, Crease and Super Snipe were fairly well bunched inside the final furlong, when Marut shot through, and, holding off a determined challenge by Super Snipe, he won impressively by a length. Lovemorn held on for third, a length in front of Pierre, just in front of Crease and Personality. Marut was near the rear early, and had a lot of ground to make up in the last two furlongs. Super Snipe was unlucky in being sent back passing the half mile, and losing valuable ground. The day’s racing brought the Ellis family into prominence, as Excellency is trained by F. W. Ellis, and was ridden by his son W. F. Ellis, and L. J. Ellis rode both Beaumaris and Pastel. F. W. Ellis and son were associated with Royal Lancer’s Cup success in 1942.
The attendance was large, but because of trying heat, many patrons preferred seeking shade between races, and in consequence the total totalisator turnover was affected to a certain extent, while there was a large exodus from the course before the programme concluded. It was probably the hottest New Zealand Cup day for many years. The turnover, however, was very satisfactory, and showed a substantial increase on that of last year, when the weather was showbry and was the cause of a much smaller attendance than that of Saturday. The course was very hard, and dust was raised in some parts. It was not surprising, therefore, that fast times were recorded in all races.
The programme was run in hot weather. The track was hai;d and fast. The totalisator turnover was £154,897 10s as against £139,439 10s for the corresponding day last year. •Remaining results are as follows: —
