Earlier women and children were evacuated from the residential area around the palace as a group of guards, loyal to the President, prepared to defend the palace against attack. They had machine-guns, grenades and rifles in readiness. The Minister of Government and Justice, Mr Abilio Bellido, was gaoled along with two high loyalist officers last night when they attempted to thwart the coup.
