NEW ZEALANDERS IN SECOND ROUND FOR N.S.W. TITLES

SYDNEY, November 19.—Miss E. G. Attwood played cleverly to defeat Mrs Sadie Newcombe 8-6, 6-3 in the second, round of the New South Wales tennis championships at Rushcutter Bay. Mrs Newcombe, who toured New Zealand with the Australian team, is seeded sixth in the women’s singles. Miss Betty Potter, though beaten by the New South Wales representative player, Miss Esma Ashford, had chances.

Miss Mavis Kerr was completely oil form in her match against Mrs H. Hopman, who had an easy win. ‘ In the junior singles, Miss Judy Burke was. surprisingly beaten by Miss Faith Parker, a hard court player from Sydney. Miss Burke showed little initiative after winning the first set.

Miss Becroft played impressively. Results (New Zealanders ' mentioned first) were:— Women singles.—Second ‘round: Miss E. G. Attwood beat Mrs' S. Newcombe 8-6, 6-3; Miss B. Potter lost to Miss Esma Ashford, 5-7, 4-6; Miss M. L. Kerr lost to Mrs H. Hopman, 0-6, 0-6.

Doubles.—First round: Misses Kerr and J. Mac Gibbon beat Misses Crick and Cooper, 6-0, 6-0; Misses Attwood and Potter beat Misses Magny and Nolan, 6-3, 6-3. Junior.—Singles: Miss J. Burke lost to Miss F. Parker, 6-1, 2-6, 3-6; Miss E. Becroft beat Miss S. Stoneham, 6-3, 6-1.
