ELLIOTT OFF TO ANOTHER RED MEETING
SYDNEY, This Day (Rec. 1 p.rn.). -—The general secretary of the Seamen’s Union, Mr E,' V. Elliott, left Sydney late last night for Hong Kong by air to attend the conference of Asian and Australasian countries at Peking next Tuesday. The conference has been called by the World Federation of Trade Unions, from which the trade union movements of Britain, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and most European countries not in the Soviet group withdrew earlier this year. Mr Elliott at first attempted' to conceal his identity from pressmen, but later gave an interview. He said that the Seamen’s Union was paying all his expenses as its delegate.
Mr Elliott is a member of the central committee of the Australian Communist Party. His flight to Hong Kong is the fourth overseas visit by'leading Australian Communists this. year. - A few months ago he represented the Australian Seamen’s Union, the Waterside Workers’ Federation, and the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Federation at a conference of the World Federation of Trade Unions at Milan. Afterwards he went to Marseilles and was elected vice-presi-dent of the International Union of Seamen. Returning to Australia, he fought unsuccessfully to prevent the Australian Council of Trade Unions disaffiliating from the World Federation.
