Agreement On War Memorial Plans Reached
Progress towards the commencement of definite work on Greymouth’s war memorial project—a community sports'and recreation centre surrounding the municipal swimming bath—was made at a meeting last night, when the executive of the WaiMemorial Committee met representatives of the West Coast Swimming Centre and the West Coast Basketball Association, both of which are holding building funds. After the chairman, the Mayor (Mr F. F. Boustridge) had explained the full scheme and the procedure required in connection with the obtaining of Government approval and subsidy, a full discussion took place on various aspects of the scheme, including the provision of r a community hall on the grounds. Meeting First Costs Several points'on which the various bodies interested had held conflicting views were clarified and it was decided that the cost of preparing the required to enable the scheme to proceed further should be borne in the manner set out in a motion by Mr F. A. Kitchingham. Mr Kitchingham’s motion, which was carried, was as follows 1 — “That this committee recommends that plans be obtained for the whole of the war memorial plans and specifications for the bath buildings, including roofing and heating of the water and community hall, also plans in connection with basketball courts on the acceptable site, the cost of such plans to be apportioned against the subsidy obtainable by reason of the Swimming Centre and Basketball Association moneys, and any balance of the cost to be advanced by the Borough Council.” Delegates representing the swimming and basketball associations indicated that they were in agreement with the proposal that their “building” funds should be handed over to the committee under, the terms set out in the motion,'and were prepared to make recommendations in that direction to their respective organisations. Campaign For Funds The question of opening a vigorous campaign for the war memorial fund was considered that it was decided that a further meeting of the executive should be held next Tuesday, to make arrangements for a meeting of the general committee, to discuss a campaign. A recommendation that a representative of the Basketball Association should be added to the executive was approved. The basketball delegates stated that the association would prefer the courts and other amenities to be located in a separate position, but as an integral part of the whole scheme, and it was decided that the association should inspect the ground available and make recommendations.
Present at the meeting were: —the Mayor, Mr Boustridge (chairman), Mesdames F. A. Kitchingham and R. Longstaff, Messrs F. A. Kitchingham, W. S. McClymont, F. Costello, L. W. Mills (executive), Mrs S. Rodgers and Miss J. Blackie ''Basketball Association), Mr M. R. Bunt (Swimming Centre) and Mr N. E. Clemens (secretary) .
