Notifiable Diseases One death from tuberculosis in Canterbury was reported to the Department of Health last week. During the week there were three cases of tuberculosis, two cases of scarlet fever in Canterbury, and another case of the” same disease on the West Coast.

Hauiti In Mishap The Westland Shipping Coy’s, vessel, Hauiti, was involved in a mishap while travelling from Wellington to Hokitika last week. It is thought that a blade of the propeller was lost through striking a floating log. The vessel shuddered and the engine raced until speed was reduced, and .she completed the journey at a speed of four knots. The Hauiti will be put on the slip at Wellington this week, when the extent of the damage will be discovered. Rail-Car Strikes Tree

A broken window in the engine - room and damage to the light, resulted when the west-bound .rail-car from Christchurch to the West Coast struck a tree fouling the line about half a mile on the Canterbury side of the Poerua station yesterday ■ morning. It is thought that the tree was brought down by the high winds which prevailed in that area yesterday morning. The rail-car was able to proceed, however, and reached Greymouth on time. The Greymouth dredge, Mawhera, which has been carrying out dredging operations at Wanganui, is expected to leave tomorrow, on return to Greymouth where urgent dredging work is necessary. Seven members of the Greymouth Harbour Board staff left for* Wanganui yesterday to form a crew to sail the vessel to Greymouth, where she is due on Friday, provided weather conditions are favourable. Ahaiira Arrpcf Arrested at Ahaura last evening, a welder, Clifford Alymer Jackson, aged 30, appeared in the Police Court at Greymouth this morning on a charge of disobedience of a mamtenance order in respect of his wife and child. It was stated that the arrears to July 19, 1949, amounted to £92 ss.
