Shipyard Workers Dismissed

One thousand shipyard workers have been paid off from one of the repairing yards oh the Tyneside because of the completion of two big conversion contracts. More dismissals are believed to be pending. Although the conversion work finished a fortnight ago, the men were employed until now to give them a chance , to find other employment It is expected that another 300 or 400 men will be paid off in a fortnight’s time, when work on the liner Strathmore is completed. Mr J. M. Ormiston, general manager of the Naval Yards, said that unemployment among shipyard workers on the Tyne appeared to be increasing. Conversion work and the making good of war looses were coming to an end, and new orders were not coming forward. This was only to be expected because of the increasing foreign competition and the high costs of building ships.—London, October 3.
