SPORTING Outstanding Gallop By Broie At Riccarton

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.—Excellent gallops by Vitamin, Broie, and Robin Redbreast were recorded on the Riccarton tracks yesterday morning, when particularly fast times were recorded. Broie and Robin Redbreast worked so well that they will be fancied in their engagements at Washdyke on Saturday. The No. .7 grass track was in use and it provided exceptionally fast going. The pegs for the No. 6 track had to be uspd, making the No. 7’ several yards shorter than it should be, and in consecpience some outstanding times were recorded.

The fastest sprint of the morning was credited to Vitamin, who finished clear of Romantic at the end of five furlongs in 59 3-5, the last three in 35.

Boson led Symbolic over the same ground in 1.0 2-5, the last three in 36 2-5.

Magical recorded 1.2 2-5 under a strong hold, and his stable-mate Betula sprinted three furlongs in 36.

Ned Kelly, with his trainer up, ran five furlongs with General Argosy in 1.4.

Cypher and Theocritus reeled off half a mile in 48 2-5, and others included Pastel, 50; Lovemorn and Nocturnal, 50. Robin Redbreast finished in front of Highway and Upshot after taking 1.27 3-5 for seven furlongs, the last four in 51 3-5, and Te Kooti and Periwig followed in 1.30, the last four in 51 1-5.

Turf Topic and Owanga ran six furlongs in 1.16 1-5, and Neptina and Finance recorded 1.17, the second three in 39.

Maryburn’s Gallop Maryburn, joined by Johnny Peep at seven furlongs, strode over nine furlongs in 1.55, the first four in 49 4-5 and last four in 53.

Broie had a clear lead from Volomai, with Authentic tailed off, at the end of a mile in 1.40 4-5, the first four in 50.

The outside of the course proper was made available on the payment of a special fee, and several horses were worked on it. The two-year-olds Copperplate and Royal Cille ran half a mile in 51, and their stable-mates Fyxen and Judicial covered six furlongs in 1.18 2-5, the las£ four in 52 1-5. Cue and All Serene covered five furlongs in 1.5, last four in 51 3-5. Belgravia left half a mile behind in 49 3-5, and Ballochmyle followed him in 50. . . Lady Goldwyn was accompanied by Sharman over half a mile in a 0 1-5. The latter is the three-year-old filly by Balloch from Valadore, dam of Kindergarten _ and Golden Souvenir, in L. J. Ellis’s stable, and is to have her first race at Washdyke on Saturday.

Flying Sovereign

Flying Sovereign and Personality were paired in a smart gallop over five furlongs in 1.2 4-5, the last lour m p 4 e 9 ridot' and Charlie McCarthy strode over a mile in 1.48 4-5, the first half in 52 1-5. Infatuate and Disturbance kept

abreast throughout a mile gallop in 1.44, each half in 52. There were a few gallops on the plough, including Kartikeya, who ran seven ' furlongs comfortably in 1.31.

Open Range and Detention sprinted half a mile in 50 3-5, and Stag Dance recorded 50 4-5.

The seven-year-old mare Derene, sister to Citril, and owned by Mr E. J. Jennings, has produced a colt foal to Boissier, and is to visit the same sire again.

Single Direct Single Direct was sent out favourite for the sprint race at Epsom, but never threatened serious danger. With these races under him, E. N. Kennerleys representative should be cherry ripe for the New Zealand Trotting Cup at the end of this month.

Captain Sandy The form of the New Zealand Jubilee Cup candidate, Captain Sandy, will be watched with interest in the Flying Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Captain Sandy,- which is one of the favourites for the big event at Addington later in the month, topped the list of stake-winners last season when he earned £10,729 for nine wins, four seconds, a third, and a fourth.

A Good Galloper Consulate, now quartered at Rotorua, made a reappearance in the open sprint at Te Aroha on Saturday, beingunplaced. The four-year-old Solicitor General gelding created a big impression at his last start at the Wellington winter meeting, where he spreadeagled a particularly strong field of hacks in the seven-furlong Woburn Handicap, winning by 12 lengths from Six- Abbot and John Silver. Consulate has won three of the five races he has contested, proving- himself a galloper well above the average, and at his best he will test the northern sprinters.

Brilliant Speed Ascot registered a brilliant performance to finish third over two miles at New Brighton early this month, for he lost about 60 yards at the start and then got within four lengths of the winner. Bronze Gold, who was always well placed. Ascot promises to reach good class and although he ruined his chance at the' start at Meth ven, he should be much better suited by the small field at Forbury on Saturday.

Worth Watching The Laird (Coronach-Jewish Girl) won a hack race under difficuties at Hastings, and he also went a good race in the Guineas. He is a big colt by Coronach from Jewish Girl, who is by Rabbi from the Linfond mare Cessation. He is very stoutly bred, and has the lines of a stayer.

Sweet Spray’s Win In spite of losing a couple of lengths at the start, the favourite, Sweet Spray scored attractively in the Stewards Handicap at Hastings last Saturday. Treneere also lost a lot of ground at the start, the first to break the line being Opulent, Virginius and Blue Spec. With four furlongs to run Opulent led Virginius by a length and they were followed by Sweet Spray who had made up her ground rapidly. Most prominent of the others were Bolivar, The Missioner, Blue Spec and Solimbine. Virginius and Opulent were together at the top of the straight, just in front of Sweet Spray, Bolivar, The Missioner and Solimbine. Sweet Spray reached the front at the furlong and carried on to win by a length from Solimbine. who came home well to beat Opulent by half a length for second. The Missioner was a handy fourth followed by Spandau, Bolivar, Virginius, Indian Song, Blue Spec and Treneere.

Hawke’s Bay Guineas The Hawke’s Bay Guineas does not occupy the same position of importance that it formerly did, and at one time it was deleted from the calendar. Some grand horses have won the race. Maxim, Manton, St Hippo, Multiform, Seahorse, Renown, Menschikoff, Runnymede and Commendation were among the winners, while such a good one as Stepniak tasted defeat. Golden Spa was a worthy winner on Saturday at surprisingly good odds. In Saturday’s race Recess led the field for home from Super Snipe, Talent, Abbotsford. The Laird, Golden Link and Golden Spa. At the furlong Abbotsford and Super Snipe had drawn up to Recess with Golden Spa putting in an appearance with a brilliant run in the centre of the track and The Laird also challenging. Golden Spa soon hit the front and drew awav to win decisively by three lengths from The Laird, who came home strongly to beat Super Snipe by a neck for second. Golden Link was a good fourth ahead of Abbotsford, Hit or Miss and Lady Ella, His Nibs and Recess with a gap to Talent, Symbourn and The Dolphin. Fields For Masterton R.C.
