Coal Output In Europe The industrial correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that European coal production increased by more than 2,000,000 tons in August. Petrol Rationing Expected The reintroduction of petrol rationing from November 1, with the former rations cut by 10 per cent., is expected to be approved by the Federal Cabinet this week. Three persons were killed and two others badly injured when an armed mob of 400 persons attacked police at Cuddapah. says the Madras correspondent of The Times. The police had arrested nine Communist leaders. The crowd, using firearms, lathis, and clubs, attempted to release the Communists. The police returned the fire. It is now estimated that more, than 700 Communists have been arrested in southern India, but the area has generally been quiet since the banning of the Communist Party.—London, October 4.

Shooting On Trieste Border The Associated Press correspondent in Trieste says that two British soldiers were wounded last night by gunfire from the Jugoslav side of the Free Territory frontier. A communique from British headquarters said it was presumed that the shots were fired by a Jugoslav sentry. The wounded men were taken to a British military hospital. Their condition is reported to be satisfactory—London, October 4. Coal Strike Violence

One man was killed and three others were injured today in coal strike violence. A truck-driver hauling coal from the Communion mine at Grundy, Virginia, was killed when he was struck by boulders which crashed down a hillside. The sherriff said: “We know definitely -that somebody pushed the recks off the mountain.” At Pokeville, Tennessee, non-union miners ambushed 20 unionists and wounded three with gunfire. U.N. Commission On Korea The Political Committee of the United Nations, in the face of Soviet opposition, today decided to keep in being the United Nations Commission on Korea to observe and report on any developments which might lead to - a military conflict in Korea. The countries represented on the commission will be Australia, China, France, India, the Philippines, Salvador and Turkey. The committee’s resolution was adopted by 44 votes to six, with five nations abstaining. A Russian proposal to terminate the life of the commission and leave the unification of their country to the people of Korea themselves, was lost by a similar majority. Jugoslavia supported Russia. The committee approved strengthening the commission by granting it power to appoint military observers. A joint resolution proposed by the United States, Australia, China, and the Philippines, also empowered the commission to “verify the withdrawal of Soviet occupation forces in so far as it is in a position to do so,” —New York, October 3,
