Two Vacancies On Runanga Council To Be Filled
Nominations are to be called by the Runanga Council to fill two extraordinary vacancies which have occurred on the council. The first vacancy was created by the death recently of Mrs W. Wright, and at last evening’s meeting of the Council Cr G. R. Brown tendered his resignation, due to his transfer from the district.
■ The . Town Clerk reported that it was provided by law that where the vacancies occurred more than one year from the next election, then an election must be hem to fill the vacancies. Rresent at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr G. E. English) and Coun-y cillors Brown, C. Barrow, J. Andersori and W. Rafferty. Ratepayers’ Requests Mr T. Durkin, Herd street wrote regarding the need for timber support to a drain fronting his property. It was decided that timber for repairs be supplied. Applications were received from Messrs P. W. Campbell, A. Taylor and J. Docherty for the supply of concrete pipes to pipe the drains fronting their properties.—lt was decided to grant the. applications to the extent that pipes are available. The District Engineer, Railways Department wrote regarding the council’s application for compulsory stop signs - to be erected at all railway crossings within the borough. He pointed out that it was the practice to erect such signs only where visibility was very bad and the traffic density heavy. He asked the Council to reconsider its application. It was decided to apply for signs for the Mills and Seddon streets crossings. ‘ •
Mr J. Callinan applied for permission ' to instal a septic tank and the application was referred to the health inspector. , .Building permits for work totalling £127 were granted. ..Making., further, reference to the Mines Department’s request that access, be-provided-on the unformed section of Somerled avenue to permit the-erection of houses,'the Mayor said the delay in forming the road was hindering the department. At the present time it was possible to secure road material from the ►beach by the use of a mechanical shovel. It was decided to have the council lorry cart gravel from Rapa hoe and to endeavour to secure an additional lorry to expedite the work. It was decided that the work of improving the outfall of the drain in McDougall avenue be given priority. Saturday Night Dahces As the result of complaints received by the Mayor regarding the holding of dances on Saturday night, and extending into Sunday morning, it was decided that in future the by-laws must bo adhered to, and the permission of the couw-il first ob’ained.

The May ci -'-xpresoc-J ilio icgxct. of the councillors al the departure of Cr Brown and wished him well in his new location. He said that they had not always agreed with one another, but that was not important. . Cr Brown had been a useful councillor. Cr Brown suitably replied.
