ATHLETICS Grey Season To Open Earlier: Annual Meeting

In view of the early dates arranged for championship meetings this season, in order that the team for the ■Empire Games in February may bo selected, the amateur athletic season will open earlier than usual at Grey- , mouth. This was decided at the ani nual meeting of the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club last evening, when Saturday, October .29, was proposed as the opening date. » ■ A field day will be held on this day. and the points competition will begin the following week. j Arrangements were made for a 'working bee to prepare the Victoria Park track next Sunday morning. There was an attendance of about 75 at the meeting, over which Mr T. Blackie presided. Mr Blackie was returned unopposed for another term as president. ; Lack Of Support i Moving the adoption of the annual i report, Mr E. M. Todd referred to the Jack of public support for amateur ■athletics in the South Island, and 'urged that members themselves give more co-operation to officials, par- • ticularly in arranging for and storing ’equipment required at sports meetj ings. The strength of the club competi- ' tively and through its friendly spirit was commended by Mr R. W. Smith, jWho referred to the different spirit prevailing, for example, in Otago clubs. The enthusiasm and ability shown by the juvenile section of the club indicated that the club had not yet reached its full strength, he said. After starting with a balance of 9s, the year’s operations closed with a credit of £3B, reported the treasurer, Mr I. Steel, in his financial ‘statement. Expenditure during the ■ term totalled £ 168, main items being ’the Mahar Cup trip, £52; printing 1 and advertising, £24; affiliation and registration, £ll ss; and trophies, ! £2l. Principal receipts included subscriptions, £24; competitions, ; £7O; shop day, £4O; collection at West Coast championships, £10; and nominations for championships, £5.
