REGULAR COAST CARGO SERVICE: SMALL SHIP SOUGHT

A regular cargo service between Wellington and Greymouth, and return,' is <to be established early in the New Year, if arrangements now being made are completed. The sponsor of the service, Mr Richard R. Smith, of Wellington, is to leave shortly for Los Angeles to take possession of a motor-vessel which will be engaged on the service. Interested in the possibilities of a regular small-cargo service between Greymouth and Wellington as a result of the recent negotiations by the Greymouth and Wellington Chambers of Commerce for an improved service in the interests of Greymouth businessmen, Mr Smith has been given the support of local business interests.

According to information received in Greymouth today by Mr R. J. Truman, president of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce, the proposal has. received the backing “to the limit” of the Minister of Marine, who has been instrumental in obtaining a dollar allocation for the purpose of acquiring a suitable vessel. Mr Smith plans to leave Wellington next Saturday for Honolulu en rou te to Los Angeles, where he will take delivery of a motor-vessel for the West The ship with which it is proposed to establish the service will be small, but will be capable of taking 200 tons of cargo or more, and wall be reserved for general cargo-carrying duties between Wellington and Greymouth and return.
