Average Success For Anglers On Opening Day

Rain at the week-end did not dampen the enthusiasm of fishermen and on Saturday morning, which marked the opening of the trout fishing season, there was the usual exodus from Greymouth of hopeful anglers, carting gear and food supplies to nearby rivers. For many fishermen, it was a day of disappointment, but there were others whose catches were a happy augury for better things to come.

Anglers along the Orangipuku recorded some good catches. The Mayor of Greymouth, Mr F. F. Boustridge, caught 11 fish of a total weight of 371bs, the' biggest weighing s|lbs. They were caught on a lure. Another angler on this river had a tally of six fish for his week-end endeavours. At Lake Brunner, three fishermen, Messrs H. Hill, W. Berry and B. Knowles, took a total of 19 fish. The total weight of the catch would be about 401bs and the heaviest Sjlbs. There were not the usual big numbers of anglers on the lake, and apart from this party only one other boat was sighted. It would appear that the most popular "haunt” was again the Arnold river, and reports from there suggested that some anglers had average success. Those fishing the Taramakau did not have much luck and conditions were unfavourable.

Yesterday was the more suitable day for anglers in most areas as the rivers were just starting to rise and as far as the water was concerned conditions were good for angling. Overhead conditions, however, were not so good, and had the. day been brighter better results might have been reported. It would, seem that there was a record number of anglers out at the week-end, as throughout Friday in Greymouth fishing licences for the season were selling very readily. Also, on days leading up to the opening day, there was a heavy demand for gear.
