WORLD ‘PEACE’ DAY CELEBRATED IN SOVIET GERMANY
LONDON, October I.—According to the Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press, the entire Russian- , controlled press in Germany today, broke out in a chorus of articles praising peace. The drive was based on the Soviet celebration tomorro'W of “World Peace. Day.” Rallies are planned in the Soviet zone of Germany and in the satellite countries. The Red Army’s official newspaper in Berlin, the Taegliche Rundschau, dropped its usually hot-tempered tone, and spoke of peace in dulcet tones. . ■;./ A new weekly newspaper published. by the “Society for German-Sov-iet Friendship” said in its first edition that its symbol would be the dove of peace. It added, however: “Our dove has sharp claws and will take up the fight against the raven of the Western press.” t Demonstrations will be held tomorrow at dozens of points along the border between Eastern and Western Germany. Beacons will be lit along the frontiers tonight to “spread the light of peace” to Western Germans. Six thousand persons tonightstreamed into the British zone of t Germany without passes after Soviet zone officials had removed the barrier near Lubeck, as part of the “World Peace Day” celebrations. One thousand persons went into the Soviet zone without permits. . .. Five thousand Germans illegally crossed the border today near the regular control point at Eichholz; Hesian border- police near Kassel arrested 70 Soviet zone Germans who had entered the American zone Without passes.. United ; States Constabulary forces are reinforcing the German border authorities at many points, in an endeavour to prevent illegal mass crossings tomorrow.' '' In Berlin, Western sector police today arrested 33 persons and broke up demonstrations organised by members of the Communist Socialist : Unity Party, __________ '
