Despatch Is Favoured For Methven Cup Race

So far this season the biggest end of the stake has successfully evaded Despatch, but the Lusty Volo gelcling will have another chance tomorrow of re-entering the winning list if he lines up for the Methven Cup. The two-furlong straight tests the best of stayers, but. Despatch has never shown any weakness in his armour as far as staying is concerned. Bull’s Eye and Gay .Piper are others in the field with the right credentials.

At the New Brighton meeting Despatch was a strong contender in each of Ms races, running third on the first day and then going down narrowly to an outsider in Premier Royal on the second day. A win for N. Price’s representative would be well deserved. .Bull’s Eye is far from being a reliable pacer and if he leaves on reasonable terms he will be a “headache” to the opposition. His fourth placing at. New Brighton was full of merit. Proprietor’ ran third, in this race last year behind Gold. Review and Lyndale. Gay Piper has been “knocking at the door” and G. McKendry’s candidate will not be far away at the finish. Last Saturday he .was a good third to Premier Royal and Despatch, and he is the type who will improve with racing. - Victory Dale, Star Rosa and Parawa Derby are a likely trio in the Holmes Memorial of one mile and a-quarter. Victor Dale, formerly trained in Southland, is a smart sprinter over this distance, while Parawa Derby was unlucky at New Brighton. I Distinction will no doubt be a warm I favourite for the main- handicap on ' the second day of the Hawke's Bay I Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow. Last Saturday he was a little unlucky I not to score an outright win, and the Tventham-trained Foxbridge gelding should account for his field in the I Lowry Memorial. Strongest opposition may come from Ngakoti—a consistent handicapper. Golden Spa, in spite of his defeat in the Wanganui Guineas, looks the winner of the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. At Wanganui, he was the virtual pacemaker, and if given the trail tomorrow he will prove his superiority over Hit Or Miss and his other rivals. The Hawke’s Bay course should suit him more so than was the case 1 at Wanganui.
