HELIO HAS PROSPECTS AT WINGATUI MEETING

Beaumaris Is Fancied For Guineas

Helio and Beaumaris promise to be in the spotlight in their respective races at Wingatui tomorrow when the Dunedin Jockey Club will hold the second day of its spring meeting. . Rarely has Helio run a poor race at Wingatui and after his decisive win last Saturday he will carry a lot of public support tomorrow. Beaumaris’s task in the Dunedin Guineas will not be an easy one, but he will see out’ the mile journey better than most of his rivals. The Sir Galloway colt, Swayup, had no trouble in winning the John Grigg Stakes, with Beaumaris in second place. Possibly he will ' be the first choice on the totalisation. Trinidad and Royal Scrip were winners on the first day of the meeting.

That grand mare from the south, Excellency, will make a return to racing in the Grandstand Handicap which is the feature distance event on tomorrow’s programme. Excellency is being “tipped” as an early prospect for the New Zealand Cup, and although her dam Rodeur—a fine sprinter—never won beyond one mile, Excellency proved capable of winning up to one and a half last season. A proved weight-carrier, the Salmagundi mare races well when fresh. Helio, with a drop of nine pounds in weight compared with last Saturday, looks a very dangerous candidate, while if the going improves Fine Night may show something like his best form. Night Owl, Western Front and Some Sal led the field home last Saturday and they will have to be considered tomorrow, A new comer is Detract, one of the brightest graduates from hack company in the south in the past season. Favourites may be Helio, Detract and Some Sal.

Sir Abbot and Terminus will probably dispute favouritism in the Federal Handicap of seven furlongs. Improved track conditions would bring Terminus into strong favour.

I Magnaform, Mount Barker and Royal Sal are other strong candidates. Flying Fort has not always raced with the best of luck but her chance may come in the Milburn Hack Handicap for apprentice riders. The Washdyke-trained mare has been placed in better company than she will meet tomorrow. Strongest opposition may come from Great Bid, who will be suited by the small field,] and Subtraction, a member of A. E. Didham’s team who was off colour when taken to Trentham. . Horses in form are as follows: — Waikari Hurdles. —Turora, Moonlit, Diameter. Novice Handicap.—Prefect, All Hurry, Aberdare. Milburn Handicap.—Flying Fort, Subtraction, Great Bid. Grandstand Handicap.—Helio, Detract, Fine Night, Dunedin Guineas. — Beaumaris, Swayup, Trinidad. Juvenile Handicap.—White Robe, Command, Dunkirk. Federal Handicap.—Sir Abbot, Terminus, Magnaform. Salisbury Handicap.—Marut, Pacific Edition, Show Boy.
