McLEAN SHIELD AT STAKE TOMORROW

The final club match in the West Coast Rugby Union’s 1949 competition will be played at Rugby Park, Greymouth, tomorrow, when Star (Greymouth) and Excelsior (Hokitika) play for the McLean Shield. This match, which will close the season, will be the first senior club match for a month. Star and Excelsior, which won the second-round competitions played in the Greymouth and Hokitika districts, thus earning the right to play for the McLean Shield, have met only once before this season. This meeting was at Hokitika when Cass Square was ’muddy and badly cut up and resulted in a draw, each side scoring three points. It is interesting to note that the two teams at present share the McLean Shield. After Star defeated Excelsior in the final of last year’s championship, the teams played again for the McLean Shield,, and the match was drawn. The Star team for tomorrow is as follows: —A. Hines; J. R. Steel, R. Nelson, A. Blackie, E. Stackhouse; B. Hayton, H. Hunter; L. McDougall; G. Nelson, W. Curtain, H. Dixon, D. Brien. M. Wilson, C. Dalziel, D. Wilson, W. Bardsley, J. Bingham,
