Solent Flying-boat Arrives From Britain

AUCKLAND, Sept. 29 (P.AOTen years after Tasman Empire Airways carried its first fare-paying passengers from Auckland to Sydney late in 1939, the first of the company’s new Solent flying-boats, the most modern of Britain’s marine airliners, arrived from Southhampton this afternoon. The Royal Mail aircraft, Ararangi, after crossing the Tasman easily in six hours, completed her delivery flight with a mild “beat up” of the company’s headquarters and a smooth landing. She took less than seven days for the journey from Britain. The big aircraft, which is externally an obvious successor to the original Empire flying-boats and the present fleet of Tasman class aircraft, delighted her passengers and crew. Both Captain K. A. Brownjohn, the company’s operations manager, and Captain C. G. Griffiths, who commande the aircraft, spoke highly of her performance and prospects. The first of four sister ships built specially for Tasman Airways, the Ararangi can carry 45 passengers. She cruises at more than 200 miles an hour, and weighs 79,0001 b when fully laden.
