BILLIARDS TITLE MEETING FOR AUCKLAND NEXT YEAR

AUCKLAND, This Day (P.A.).— The Australian and New Zealand Billiards championship will be held in Auckland next year. It was originally planned to hold the British Empire championship in conjunction with the Empire Games, but the scheme fell through. The British Billiards Control Council in England could not grant the Empire tournament to New Zealand because of the cost of transport and the long time players would be away. India, and South Africa were similarly affected. A team of three Australians has been selected to compete in the Australian and New Zealand championship. It comprises R. Marshall (West Australia, world amateur champion and winner of the British Empire title in 1934 and 1938); T. Cleary (Victoria, runner up to Marshall in the 1948 Australian championships and winner in 1947); A. G. Bull (New South Wales). The player-manager of the New Zealand team will be R. Carrick (Auckland), six times New Zealand champion, and one other to be selected. The date has not been finalised, but it will be in the winter following the Empire Games..
