Czech Secretary To Archbishop Sent To Prison
PRAGUE, September 19 (Rec. 10 a.m.). —The Prague State Court today announced that Theodor Funk, acting-secretary to the Archbishop of Olomouc, had been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for high treason for distributing illegal leaflets.
Funk pleaded guilty to circulating directives to priests on the execution of. the Papal excommunication decree against Communists. It was also announced today that the Slovak criminal courts will try an unstated number of persons charged with rebellion. The accused allegedly attempted to subvert the State system under the pretext of ‘protecting religious freedom. The Bratislava legal monthly journal, Law and Life, said that the disorders which occurred in Slovakia in June were organised 'as an ..intentional misuse of religious feeling. Roman Catholics, especially women, had gathered in some places to protect priests whom they believed to be in danger of arrest. Actually the priests were under no threats. Elements hostile to the State attacked public officers. There had been thefts and other crimes against property. Judges described these actions as crimes of rebellion. Law and Life indicated that some trials have already taken place, but gave no details.
