U.S. CUTS CIVIL STAFF FOR ARMED SERVICES

WASHINGTON, August 24 (Rec. 11.10).—The Defence Secretary, Mr Louis Johnson, announced today that 135,000 civilian employees of the United States armed services would be dismissed in his drive to reduce military spending. Navy installations were the hardest hit, being ordered to reduce by 76,000; and the Army by 41,000 and the Air Force by 18,000. The programme, effective immediately, will result in an estimated saving of 200,000,000 dollars in the current fiscal year, and 500,000,000 dollars annually thereafter. Fifty installations will be closed down and others severely curtailed.
