Greymouth Festival Opened: Results Of Competitions

The 35th annual festival of the Greymouth Competitions Society was officially opened last evening at St John’s Hall, by the Deputy Mayor, Mr J. E. Stokes, who apologised for the absence of-the Mayor, Mr F. F. Boustridge. Mr Stokes congratulated the society on overcoming many difficulties, particularly those in regard to the lack of a suitable hall, and stated that the Borough Council hoped to have such a hall in the next year or two. He referred to the benefits of competitions and wished the society a successful festival. The president of the society, the Rev. T. G. Campbell spoke briefly and welcomed the four adjudicators, Mrs ,Mavis Perfect (national dancing), Miss Muriel Swann (fancy dancing), Miss Beryl Baggs (elocution) and Mr Clifton Cook (vocal and instrumental). Mr Clifton Cook, on behalf of the judges, briefly replied. In a short ceremony at the Wesley Hall, Mr Campbell spoke briefly and officially declared the festival open.
