TWO VERY SEVERE QUAKES RECORDED BY SEISMOLOGISTS

LONDON, August 22 (Rec 1 p.m.) —Two very severe earthquakes in different parts of the world were recorded today. Mr H. V. Shaw, the noted seismologist, announced that he recorded a very severe earthquake, which dislocated three of his instruments. He estimated the epicentre of the shock as probably near the eastern extremity of the Himalayas. The Taranto observatory also' recorded this shock, which it described as of “disastrous character,” in the region of the Himalayas and south Tibet.

The Harvard University in Massachusetts reported that an earthquake “ten times more severe than that which struck Ecuador on August 5” occurred last night in the Pacific ocean off the Canadian coast.

The university seismologist said the earthquake probably originated 100 to 200 miles off shore near Vancouvqr Island. It was the largest recorded in recent years. The university instruments were in continuous motion for over six hours, recording the earthquake. The earthquake was felt along the coast from Alaska to Oregon, but little damage was done.
