Three Swimming Records

Haronoshin Furuhashi, the Japanese swimming champion, made his third world record in the National Amateur Athletic Union meeting by winning the 800 metre free-style event in 9min 35.55ec. . This was 15.4 sec faster than the record set by Bill Smith (United States) in 1944. Japanese swimmers made a clean sweep with Shiro Hashizume second arid Sumio Tanaka third. Robert Gibe, of Detroit, sprang a great surprise by winning the 100 metre free-style event. Gibe’s time was. 58.2 sec. Ris and Ramafuchi tied for second. The Japanese easily won the team trophy with 63 points. Brighton Club (Atlantic City) was second with 34, Newhaven (Connecticut) third with 25, University of lowa fourth with 20, and the American- Swimming Federation fifth with 15. —New York, August 20.
