Crossed Atlantic In Small Boat

LONDON, August. 18. (Rec. 10.30 a.m.). —Thousands lined the Devon shoreline today to give a tremendous welcome to the. Canadian brothers, Stanley and Colin Smith, who crossed the Atlantic ' from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in their self-built 20-foot cutter Nova Espero. The brothers told of a’sixweeks 3000-mile trip in cramped conditions. Their cabin measured only 6ft by 4ft.

At times they had to bail frantically to keep their craft afloat. Once they had to lie in their cabin for 18 hours with a canvas cover lashed across the top, as heavy seas swept their deck. In the Channel last night there was a dramatic family, reunion when the mother, father, and sister of the two brothers came alongside the Nova Espero in a launch.

The Nova Espero is believed to be the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic.
