U.S. OFFICER IN COMMAND IN GREECE IS CLAIM

ATHENS, August 18 (Rec. 10 a.m.). —The “Free Greek” radio claimed tonight that the Greek Government’s' operations against guerrilla forces in the Grammos and Vitsi sectors were being personally directed by General James Van Fleet, military head of the United States aid mission to Greece. The broadcast alleged that the Greek commander, General Papagos, has succumbed to a “diplomatic illness’ to give General Van Fleet an excuse to intervene in the operation. A spokesman of the Greek General Staff today claimed that 1115 Greek rebels were killed in a “crushing defeat” of guerrilla forces in the Mount Vitsi area in northern Greece between August 10 and 15. Twenty Albanians were killed on Greek soil during the action and eight were captured. The remnants of the rebel forces fled in disorder into Albania.
