Many Booksjssued There were 81 additions to the: stock of the municipal library last’ month, according to the report of the librarian, Miss E. Webster. In the same period 5246 books were issued. A loan collection of 46 books on world affairs had been received, chosen to line up with the series of lectures delivered by Mr H. O. Jefcoate under the auspices of the W.E.A. It was, however, .available to all borrowers. The inspector of nuisances, Mr J. Guerin, stated in the course of his monthly report that he found that a number of ..people who carried put their own work neglected to take out permits for such work as building fowl houses, washhouses, sheds etc. He had also checked up on some business premises in the shopping area and had found that a number ot people had an accumulation of rubbish at the back of their premises and had warned them that the offence would not be permitted. Some unknown persons were also dumping rubbish in the aerodrome area.
Stock Route Issue
Information regarding the present position in connection with the proposed .change of the stock route was sought by the Blaketown-Preston Road Ratepayers’ Association.Cr G. R. Harker said that the only way to get finality was to call another meeting of the butchers and to place the facts obtained by the council before them. “We have nothing definite to put in a reply to the association yet,” said the Mayor (Mr F. F. Boustridge) in moving that the letter-be referred to the abattoirs committee. The motion was carried.
Mr A. W. Laughton applied for assistance to build a five foot paling, fence between his property in Ashmore avenue and the proposed Cobden children’s playing area. Another resident of the same locality, Mr M. H. Eatwell, applied for assistance towards the cost of a fence already erected. Both letters were referred to the reserves committee, it being stressed that the council had already decided that a 3ft 6in fence should be the standard. WINTER DEMAND FOR GAS SLACKENING
“Demand is falling off earlier this year than usual, September being the more common month for the slackening,” stated the gas manager (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) in his report to the Greymouth Borough Council last night. He added that the general mildness of the season was the controlling factor. . For some months, stated Mr r airmaid, additional pressure had been supplied, manually, to the Cobden supply. A disused governor had been altered and installed and though manual operation was still required, a clock controller was being made by the staff to make the operation automatic. During July, one cooker, two water heaters, two fires and a copper were installed, four of the consumers being new. The cash receipts for the department for July showed a big decline, but it was pointed out that owing to the institution of two-monthly meter readings, the figures would “compare” only every second month in future. _ _ jr , Reporting as engineer, Mr fairmaid said that the reservoir had been kept full with a daily pump run of 19.39 hours. Thirteen building permits for work valued at £7,307 were issued during July.
