Scheme For National Theatre In Australia
CANBERRA, This Day (Rec. noon). —The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, has asked the State Premiers to agree to a scheme for establishing a national theatre in Australia. He told the Premiers that the Commonwealth would contribute £30,000 to a reserve trust fund and asked the States to contribute a similar amount among them. In addition, the Commonwealth proposed to give £20,000 for scholarships to train technicians, actors and actresses overseas for a national theatre company! The enterprise would be controlled by a board of trustees. The fund of £60,000 would meet any losses incurred in operating the theatre and would provide a reserve. •
