Heavy Flood Damage On Gisborne Flats
GISBORNE, This Day (P.A.).— Flood damage and other costs involved by the inundation of May, 1948, of a large portion of-the Gisborne flats totalled almost half the estimated outlay on the Catchment Board’s scheme to control future floods in the Waipaoa River., .This startling conclusion was revealed m the economic report submitted to the board by the engineer after study of the effects of flooding and the benefits to be derived from flood freedom on the flats. . ■ This’cost of the river' control scheme recently submitted to the SoilConservation and Rivers Control Council is estimated at £667,000, of which the council is expected to provide three-quarters by way of subsidy* Losses associated with the flood aggregated over £314,000.
