West Coast Farmers Successful At Bacon Competition
Westland was successfully represented at the annual bacon competition held by the Canterbury District Pig Council at the factory of T. .H. Green and Company, Ltd, Christchurch. yesterday, when farmers from this province took a major award as well as a number, of minor prizes, The competition drew 195 entries, principally from Westland and Nelson, and while this number was slightly less than last year, the entry from the Nelson district was limited to those carcases which gained certificates of merit at the recent Nelson competition. But for this the entry would have been a record. West Coast Winner As in recent competitions in the North Island, the Large White and Berkshire cross took a leading place yesterday. This breed, exhibited by Mr M. A. Paterson (Koiterangi), took first place in the competition for the best carcase. Mr Paterson, who won the first competition, is a returned serviceman who last year purchased a farm from Mr A. Jamieson, who won the recorded entry section last year.
The results were:— T H. Green and Company, Ltd, Cup for best carcase in competition (possible 100 points): M. A. Paterson (Koiterangi), 91 points (breed, Large White-Berkshire) 1; Lincoln College, 89 points (Lincoln Red) and E- &■ Taylor (Takaka), 89 points (Large White-Berkshire) (equal) 2; J. Graham (Rotomanu), 86 points (Berkshire), R. and F. O’Connor (Nelson), 86 points (Large White), and F. Scadden (Onekaka), 86 points (BerkshireTamworth) (equal) 4. New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association’s rose bowl for best recorded entry (150 points) : Lincoln College, 129 points and 129 points (two carcases, Lincoln Red) (equal) 1: Lincoln College, 127 points (Lincoln Red), 3; Lincoln College, 120 points (Lincoln Red) and S. Wall (Koitsrangi), _ 120 points (Berkshire-Large White) (equal), 4. . Exhibitors of all carcases scoring 70 per cent, or more of the possible points were awarded certificates of merit. Thirty-nine certificates were gained by the 75 Nelson entries and 46 in the 120 entries from Canterbury, West Coast and Marlborough. The judges were Mr P. G. Stevens, senior lecturer in animal husbandry at Canterbury Agricultural College, and Mr H. W? Mclntosh, supervisor of the Canterbury District Pig Council.
Litter Displayed On display was the 10 litter .produced in six months under normal farming conditions by Mr S. Wall (Koiterangi). One of these animals was placed in the competition. The litter was produced by a large white sew bred by Mr G. C. Hayden (Barrytown) and a Berkshire boar owned by Mr P. Cook (Matai). , Approximately 120 producers and members of allied trades were welcomed to the presentation ceremony by the chairman of the Canterbury District Pig Council (Mr J. R. Dench). The chairman of directors of T. H. Green and Company, Ltd (Mr W. Bottrell) and the South Island superintendent of the Pig Marketing Association (Mr G. Templeton) presented the cup and rose bowl on behalf of their respective organisations.
