Soviet Note On Italy Is Rejected
LONDON, August 2 (Rec. 1 p.m.). —Britain, France, and the. United States today rejected Russia’s objection to Italy’s membership of the
"North Atlantic Pact. Britain, in replying to a letter from the Soviet Ambassador to the British Foreign Secretary, Mr Ernest Bevin, said the Soviet Government seemed to have a misconception about the nature of the North Atlantic Treaty. ' “The treaty is not an aggressive instrument,” said the British Government.
'The letter from the Soviet Ambassador on July 19 claimed that the signatories to the pact formed, a group directed against the Soviet Union, jhe people’s democracies. The Soviet claimed also that Italy’s accession to the pact violated the Italian peace treaty. The British reply said the text of the pact made clear its “completely defensive nature,” and that it was directed “only against armed aggression-” . , The British reply also said; “The Italian Government has not, in fact or by implication, committed any breach of the peace treaty.” The French and United States Notes were along the same lines.
